[wise eDYNASTY WORDS]: Ch. 5 - When a Beautiful Website Wasn't Enough

WHEN A BEAUTIFUL WEBSITE WASN'T ENOUGH

WISELY SHARE…

What my first attempts at building online taught me about the difference between having a website and having a business that works.

At the end of our last chapter, I shared something I had begun to understand more deeply.

Believing in the extraordinary opportunities of online business was one thing. Being able to put those opportunities to work was quite another.

And I was about to learn that lesson in a way I hadn’t quite expected.

Because when I began building my own online business, I wasn’t starting without business knowledge.

Quite the opposite.

I had spent years working with sophisticated businesses, understanding the strategies, systems + processes that helped them succeed.

I knew how important selling, marketing + management were.

I knew that the pieces of a successful business needed to work together.

And I certainly knew that looking professional wasn’t the same as being commercially successful.

But knowing all of that didn’t mean I already knew the wisest way to build online for myself.

And like so many people beginning an online business, I started with something that seemed perfectly sensible.

I needed a website.

A place to present what I offered.

A place where people could discover my business. A place that would become the beginning of something I hoped to build + grow.

So I found an affordable solution.

I set it up. I made it look nice.

And for a little while, it felt as though things were coming together.

After all, I had a website!

Surely that was a good beginning.

Well…

As it turned out, that depended rather heavily on what I expected that website to actually do.

🖥️ It Looked Like a Wonderful Beginning

There’s something rather exciting about seeing your business begin to take shape online.

The pages.

The images.

The words you’ve carefully chosen.

That first moment when you can look at a screen and see something that feels like the beginning of your very own business.

I understood that excitement.

I was experiencing it myself.

And I could certainly see why so many people started with a website solution that was affordable, attractive + relatively easy to set up.

It seemed like a sensible way to begin.

Why spend more than necessary when you’re just getting started?

Why make things more complicated than they need to be?

And why not choose something that looks beautiful and allows you to move forward quickly?

Those were reasonable considerations.

But there was something I hadn’t yet discovered about the solution I’d chosen.

What looked like a good beginning wasn’t necessarily equipped to support everything I needed to do next.

And that became clear when I began moving beyond the appearance of my website and into the actual work of building my business.

💸 And Then I Discovered What Was Missing

I needed to do more than present my business beautifully.

I needed to sell.

To market.

To manage what I offered.

To reach customers.

To understand what was working.

And to have the capabilities to keep building + growing.

But as I began looking more closely, I discovered that important functionality – particularly for marketing and growth – was either missing, inadequately supported or available only at additional costs.

And those costs changed the picture considerably.

The affordable beginning I thought I’d chosen was becoming something rather different.

I had invested time.

I had put effort into creating something that looked right.

And now I was discovering that the structure behind it didn’t provide what I needed to build the business I’d envisioned.

That was frustrating.

And, frankly, disappointing.

Because I wasn’t trying to create an attractive collection of webpages.

I was trying to create a business that could actually work.

And I knew how important it was to have the right capabilities behind it.

I also began thinking about what an experience like this could mean for someone who didn’t have my business background.

Someone who might assume that if a website looked professional, the business behind it was ready to go.

Someone who might invest precious time + money before discovering what was missing.

Someone who might begin to wonder whether the problem was with their business idea, when the real difficulty was with the foundation they’d chosen.

I could see how discouraging that might become.

But I wasn’t ready to give up.

Surely there was a better way to do this.

So I tried something else.

x

🔧 Surely a Custom Website Would Solve This

I decided to have a more customized website built.

This time, I hired a team of developers.

After all, if an affordable, ready-made solution couldn’t provide what I needed, perhaps a more tailored approach would.

That seemed logical.

I could explain what I wanted.

They could build it.

And I would have something designed more specifically around my business.

At least, that was the idea.

But this experience revealed another problem.

Knowing how to develop a website and knowing how to build the infrastructure a business needs are not necessarily the same thing.

The developers understood website development.

But that didn’t automatically mean they understood the selling, marketing + management capabilities that needed to work together behind a successful online business.

And as I worked through the process, I discovered that even a custom-built website could leave important business needs unmet.

That was a rather significant realization.

Because I’d now tried two very different approaches.

One that was affordable + relatively easy to set up.

And another that involved hiring people to build something more specifically for me.

Yet both experiences had exposed the same underlying issue.

I had been looking for a way to build my business online.

But what I kept finding were ways to build websites.

And those were not the same thing.

🔎 The Problem Wasn't What I Thought It Was

The more I reflected on those experiences, the clearer the distinction became.

A website could look beautiful.

It could have carefully written pages.

Wonderful photographs.

An attractive design.

And it could still be missing important capabilities needed to operate + grow a successful business.

Because a business doesn’t become successful simply by looking like one.

It needs to be able to do the work of a business.

To present what it offers.

To connect with customers.

To sell effectively.

To market wisely.

To manage the many things happening behind the scenes.

And to bring those capabilities together in a way that supports the business as it develops.

I knew that from my years inside sophisticated businesses.

But my experiences building online for myself had made the difference impossible to ignore.

I wasn't simply trying to build a website. I was trying to build a business.

And suddenly, the question I needed to ask was becoming much clearer.

It wasn’t simply:

How do I get my business online?

It was:

What does an online business actually need behind the scenes to sell, market, manage + grow successfully?

That was a very different question.

And it would lead me in a very different direction.

✨ What Those Experiences Taught Me

Looking back, I can see why those early experiences mattered so much.

They were frustrating.

They cost me time, effort + money.

And they certainly weren’t the beginning I’d imagined.

But they helped me recognize something that would become enormously important in the work I went on to create.

The foundation of an online business needs to be chosen for the business you want to build – not simply for the website you want to see.

Because the consequences of getting that decision wrong can extend far beyond the initial cost.

It can mean rebuilding things you’ve already spent time creating.

Discovering limitations just when you’re ready to grow.

Adding disconnected tools + services to compensate for missing capabilities.

Or spending more time managing the technology than doing the work you actually wanted to do.

And I couldn’t help thinking about the people I hoped would one day have the opportunity to build online more wisely.

My daughters.

Other people’s daughters + sons.

People with wonderful talents, knowledge + ideas.

People who were ready to begin creating something meaningful of their own.

I didn’t want their first steps to lead them into unnecessary obstacles they couldn’t yet see.

I wanted them to be able to begin with a clearer understanding of what their businesses would actually need.

Not simply to get online.

But to build something that could work for them.

Those experiences changed the question I was asking.

I was no longer looking for a better way to put webpages together.

I wanted to understand what an online business actually needed to function successfully – from the moment someone discovered it to everything that needed to happen behind the scenes.

And as I began looking at those needs together, something became increasingly clear.

The website was only one part of the picture.

The real challenge was understanding everything else that needed to work – and how all those pieces were supposed to fit together.

And that is where our story goes next.

Every business begins somewhere.

And every meaningful business journey is built through the ideas we explore, the decisions we make, the lessons we carry forward + the Wise Steps we take next.

So before you go, I’d love to leave you with one Wise question of your own:

Are you building the business you truly want - or simply putting together the pieces that seem like the easiest place to begin?

Perhaps you’re just beginning to explore an idea.

Perhaps you’ve already created a website.

Or perhaps you’ve been building for some time and are beginning to wonder whether the pieces behind your business are working together as well as they could.

Wherever you are in your journey, I hope this chapter encourages you to look a little further ahead.

Not only at what you need to begin.

But at what you’ll need to keep building, improving + growing.

Because a wise beginning isn’t simply about taking the fastest first step.

It’s about taking a first step that supports the future you’re trying to create.

And that is a future worth building wisely.
