[wise eDYNASTY WORDS]: Ch. 6 - What It Really Takes to Make an Online Business Work

WHAT I WANTED MY DAUGHTERS TO HAVE IN WORK AND LIFE

WISELY SHARE…

What I discovered when I looked beyond the website - and began bringing the many essential parts of a successful online business into focus.

At the end of our last chapter, I shared how two very different approaches to building my website led me to the same important realization.

I wasn’t simply trying to build a website.

I was trying to build a business.

And that changed the question I needed to ask.

Because once I stopped thinking primarily about what my website should look like, I began looking much more closely at what my business actually needed to do.

Not just today.

But as it began selling, serving customers, managing the work behind the scenes + growing.

And the more I looked, the clearer something became.

There was a great deal more involved than creating a beautiful place online.

Of course, I already knew that from my years working with sophisticated businesses.

But now I was looking at those requirements from a very different perspective.

What would all of this mean for someone building an online business of their own?

Someone with a wonderful product, a valuable service or expertise they wanted to share?

Someone who wanted to spend their time doing meaningful work – not becoming a full-time expert in every technical + operational detail of running a business online?

That was the perspective that mattered to me now.

And it led me to look at the entire business differently.

🏛️ First, It Needed a Foundation I Could Depend On

A beautiful website is a lovely thing.

I certainly appreciate beautiful design.

But if the technology behind it is unreliable, the beauty doesn’t help very much when something stops working.

An online business needs a dependable foundation.

It needs to be properly hosted.

Secure.

Protected through appropriate backups.

Capable of being maintained + updated.

And stable enough that ordinary changes don’t constantly create new problems somewhere else.

These may not be the most exciting parts of building a business.

Nobody begins dreaming of their future because they can’t wait to think about website backups!

But those things matter enormously.

Because the moment people begin depending on your business, you need to be able to depend on it, too.

Customers need to be able to visit.

To find what they need. To place orders or make inquiries.

And to trust that the business they’ve discovered is operating professionally.

I wanted business owners to have the confidence of knowing they were building on a foundation they could depend on – without having to become technology experts themselves.

And that was only the beginning.

🌍 Then, People Needed to Be Able to Find It

One of the lessons I’d learned from my first website experience was how easily people could focus on getting something online without having everything they needed to market it effectively.

But I knew how essential marketing was.

After all, even the most wonderful product or service needs to reach the people who would value it.

And that takes more than simply publishing a webpage.

A business needs ways to communicate.

To create + share useful content.

To help people discover what it offers.

To explain its value clearly.

And to make it easy for someone who’s interested to take the next Wise Step.

That might involve articles, blogs, posts, email communications, social sharing + other ways of connecting with an audience.

But the important thing wasn’t simply having the ability to publish all those things.

It was having the ability to connect them meaningfully to the business itself.

Imagine writing a wonderful article about something you know.

Someone discovers it.

They enjoy reading it.

They begin to trust your expertise.

And they become interested in learning more about what you offer.

There should be a natural path for them to continue.

To explore.

To discover a relevant product or service.

And perhaps, when they’re ready, to become a customer.

That is where content, marketing, selling + customer experience begin working together.

And it made me think about how much more effective an online business could be when those connections were thoughtfully built into its foundation.

x

x

🛍️ And Then the Business Needed to Deliver

Of course, helping people discover what you offer is only part of the story.

Because what happens when someone decides to buy?

Or book?

Or register?

Or work with you?

Now the business needs to do what it promised.

If you sell physical products, there may be inventory, orders, payments, shipping + customer communications to manage.

If you sell digital products, there needs to be a way for customers to receive what they’ve purchased.

If you offer services, you may need to organize appointments, projects, sessions or other commitments.

And if your business involves a team, there may be people, responsibilities + processes that need to be coordinated.

All of these things are part of the real work of a business.

Not simply what the customer sees before purchasing.

But everything that happens afterward, too.

And I kept coming back to something I’d learned throughout my business career.

A wonderful customer experience doesn’t end when someone decides to buy.

It continues through everything the business does to fulfill that promise.

So the structure behind an online business needed to support the actual products + services being offered.

It needed to help the owner manage the work.

Serve customers well.

And continue operating as the business developed.

Because a business should become more capable as it grows.

Not simply more complicated.

🔎 It Also Needed to Help Me See What Was Happening

Another part of building a successful business is understanding what’s actually happening inside it.

Are people finding you?

What are they interested in?

Are they discovering the products or services most relevant to them?

What is selling?

What isn’t?

And what could you improve?

I had spent years working with businesses where information, analysis + informed decision-making mattered.

And I knew that those things mattered just as much when building a business of your own.

Perhaps even more, when your time + resources were limited.

Because without useful insight, it becomes very easy to spend enormous effort doing things without knowing whether they’re moving the business forward.

I wanted business owners to have the ability to see what was happening.

To understand what was working.

To recognize opportunities.

And to make wiser decisions about what to do next.

Not to become overwhelmed by numbers – but to use meaningful information to build with greater confidence.

That also meant thinking about how people found the business in the first place.

How its content + offers were organized.

How easily customers could navigate it.

And how clearly everything connected.

Because being discoverable is important.

But helping someone find what they’re looking for once they arrive matters, too.

🛡️ And It Needed to Be Built Responsibly

There were also the less glamorous – but essential – responsibilities of running a business.

Appropriate policies.

Terms. Privacy considerations.

Security.

And the practical measures needed to help protect the business, its owner + its customers.

These aren’t always the things people are most excited to think about when they begin.

I understand that.

It’s much more fun to imagine your beautiful products, the people you’ll serve + the future you’re hoping to build.

But responsible business ownership includes preparing for the things that may not be quite as exciting.

And I wanted those considerations to be part of a wise beginning.

Not unpleasant surprises waiting somewhere further down the road.

x

✨ But Here Was the Bigger Realization

As I continued looking at everything an online business needed, I could see how quickly the list could grow.

A dependable technical foundation.

Effective selling.

Thoughtful marketing.

Business management.

Customer experience.

Useful insights.

Protection.

And the ability to keep improving + growing.

Each part mattered.

But something else mattered just as much.

How those parts worked together.

Because having a collection of tools wasn’t necessarily the same as having a business that functioned well.

One system might help you publish content.

Another might manage products.

Another might handle customer communications.

Another might track activity.

And another might be needed to connect everything together.

But what happens when those pieces don’t communicate properly?

When information has to be entered again + again?

When something that should be simple requires several separate processes?

Or when the owner spends more time managing disconnected technology than building the business they actually wanted to create?

That was the bigger picture I was beginning to see.

The real challenge wasn't simply having all the right pieces.

It was making sure those pieces could work together as one business.

And that distinction was enormously important.

Because the people I was thinking about weren’t setting out to become programmers, system integrators, marketing technologists, operations specialists + analysts all at once.

They wanted to build meaningful, profitable businesses.

To create wonderful things.

To share their expertise.

To serve customers.

To earn well.

And to build lives they loved living.

I wanted the business infrastructure to make those ambitions easier to pursue.

Not to become another obstacle standing in their way.

x

🦋 The Picture Was Becoming Clearer

By now, I was seeing the challenge very differently from when I’d first gone looking for a website.

It wasn’t about finding the prettiest design.

Or collecting the greatest number of features.

Or trying to assemble every tool someone might possibly need.

It was about understanding the real work an online business needed to accomplish.

And then bringing the right capabilities together in a way that made sense.

For the owner.

For the customers.

And for the future that business was meant to support.

That was the standard I kept coming back to.

Not simply getting online.

Building a business that could actually work.

And the more clearly I understood the bigger picture, the more determined I became to find a way to bring it all together.

Because I had started this journey wanting a different future for myself + my family.

Along the way, I’d begun imagining what might become possible for so many others.

Now I was beginning to understand more clearly what it would take to help make those possibilities real.

And the question was becoming increasingly exciting.

What if the sophisticated capabilities behind successful online businesses could be brought together in a way that made building one of your own so much wiser?

That is where our story continues.

Every business begins somewhere.

And every meaningful business journey is built through the ideas we explore, the decisions we make, the lessons we carry forward + the Wise Steps we take next.

So before you go, I’d love to leave you with one Wise question of your own:

If your business could be built around what you truly want to create - rather than around the limitations of tools you've chosen - what might become possible?

Perhaps you’d spend more time creating.

More time connecting with customers.

More time sharing what you know.

Or more time enjoying the life you’re building your business to support.

Whatever that looks like for you, I hope you’ll remember that the purpose of a strong business foundation isn’t simply to make things function.

It’s to give the work you care about a better opportunity to flourish.

And that is something worth building wisely.
