[wise eDYNASTY WORDS]: Ch. 2 - The Business Behind The Business

THE BUSINESS BEHIND THE BUSINESS

WISELY SHARE…

What I discovered when I looked beyond my own cliff - and began asking what it really takes for an individual to build successfully online.

At the end of our last chapter, I shared a conviction that was beginning to take hold.

Surely, there has to be a wiser way to do this.

I didn’t yet know what that wiser way would look like.

But I was determined to find out.

And as I began looking more closely, I discovered that my years inside sophisticated businesses had given me a rather unusual perspective on the opportunity unfolding online.

One that would eventually change what I wanted to build – and who I wanted to build it for.

🏛️I Knew What Businesses Had Behind Them

For years, I had worked with major corporations and inside sophisticated business environments.

And I had seen firsthand something that most customers never get to see.

The remarkable amount of business happening behind the business.

Behind the products people buy, the services they enjoy and the experiences they remember, there is an entire world making it all possible.

Strategies that determine where a business is going.

Structures, systems + processes that keep everything working together.

Selling + marketing that connect what a business offers with the people who need or want it.

Management, numbers + decisions that shape how successfully it operates.

Technology + infrastructure supporting it all.

And people with specialized expertise who know what to do when something needs attention, improvement or a completely different approach.

I knew that world well.

I knew how much thought, knowledge, expertise + coordination could sit behind what appeared so effortless to a customer.

And then I began looking at the extraordinary possibilities opening up online.

An individual with a wonderful idea could imagine building a business that reached far beyond her own neighborhood, city or even country.

Someone with a beautiful product could open an online boutique and welcome customers from places she’d never visited.

Someone with valuable knowledge or a skill she loved using could turn that expertise into services, classes or experiences for people around the world.

Someone who dreamed of working independently could begin imagining a business that created meaningful income while giving her greater freedom over how + where she lived and worked.

Just think about that for a moment.

An individual could now dream of building something with a reach that once would have required an extraordinary organization behind it.

I found that possibility tremendously exciting.

But as I looked more closely, I noticed something else.

The opportunity had opened up to individuals.

Yet so much of what made a business actually work still had to be understood, assembled + managed.

And here were people with wonderful ideas, valuable talents + dreams of their own, somehow expected to figure out how to bring all those pieces together.

Often without the teams, expertise, resources or infrastructure I had spent years working alongside.

The opportunity was extraordinary. But so was what an individual was expected to figure out to make it work.

And that contrast stayed with me.

✨ The Dream Was Exciting. The Next Steps Were Another Story.

Imagine having an idea you absolutely love.

Perhaps it’s a product you’ve created.

A service you know you could offer beautifully.

Something you’ve spent years learning, practicing or perfecting.

You can already picture what it could become.

The customers you might serve.

The people you could help.

The income you could create.

The freedom it might bring into your life.

And perhaps, for the first time, the possibility of building something truly your own feels wonderfully real.

But then comes the question:  Where do I actually begin?

You start looking.

Perhaps you need a website.

But what kind?

And how will people find it?

How will they discover what you’re offering?

How will you sell? Accept payments?

Deliver what they’ve purchased?

Create an experience that makes customers want to return?

How will you market, manage + keep everything working together?

And how do you know which decisions to make first?

Before long, what began as one exciting idea can feel like a hundred decisions.

And just when you think you’ve found an answer, you discover another piece you hadn’t even known to look for.

Another tool.

Another course.

Another expense.

Another decision.

All while the thing you actually wanted to build is still waiting to become real.

That was the part I couldn’t stop thinking about.

Because these weren’t necessarily people who lacked ability, ambition or willingness to work.

They might be exceptionally talented at what they do.

They might have spent years developing their expertise.

They might have something truly valuable to offer.

But knowing how to create something wonderful and knowing how to build a successful online business around it are two very different things.

x

Knowing the Pieces Isn't the Same as Knowing How to Build the Business

And there was something else my years in business had taught me.

A successful business isn’t built by simply collecting all the right pieces.

Those pieces have to work together.

What you sell shapes how you market.

How you market influences who you reach.

Who you reach influences how you sell.

And as the business succeeds, the decisions you need to make become more sophisticated.

The technology needs to support the business.

The systems need to support the customer.

And the decisions you make today can either make what you want to build tomorrow easier – or considerably harder.

It wasn’t enough to know what each piece did. I wanted to understand how they could work together to create something far greater.

Because the goal isn’t simply to have a website, learn another marketing technique or add another tool.

The goal is to build a business that actually works.

And the more closely I looked, the more I realized that what I was encountering wasn’t simply my own challenge.

💛 This Was Bigger Than My Own Business

I kept thinking about the people behind those wonderful ideas.

Someone who had spent years becoming exceptional at what she did.

Someone whose creativity, knowledge or experience could genuinely make a difference in other people’s lives.

Someone who had finally decided it was time to build something of her own.

Perhaps she’d been dreaming about it for years.

Perhaps she’d only just begun to imagine what might be possible.

And perhaps the business she wanted to build could change far more than the way she earned her income.

It could give her greater freedom.

More choices.

The opportunity to do meaningful work on her own terms.

A future she had imagined but hadn’t yet been able to create.

I knew how much knowledge + expertise sat behind the sophisticated businesses I had worked with.

And I knew how much I had needed to learn when I began building online for myself.

So I couldn’t help wondering about all those people with something valuable to offer.

What might become possible for them if the path to building a successful online business were clearer, wiser + far more accessible?

That was when the opportunity began to feel bigger than my own business.

🔎 I Wanted to Know What Made the Difference

By then, I knew I wasn’t looking for another website, another tool or another course.

I wanted to understand what made the difference between an online business that struggled to find its footing and one that could become genuinely successful.

I had seen what was possible inside major corporations.

I could see what was becoming possible for individuals.

And I couldn’t stop thinking about the distance between the two.

What if more of the knowledge, capabilities + opportunities behind sophisticated businesses could become accessible to someone building a business of her own?

Someone with a wonderful product.

Someone with a skill she loved using.

Someone with years of expertise, ready to put it to work for herself.

Someone with a dream that deserved more than an endless series of expensive experiments.

I wanted to understand what truly worked.

So I studied successful online businesses.

I researched experts, technologies, strategies + techniques.

I invested.

I tested.

I tried things for myself.

And yes… I made mistakes.

Some were frustrating.

Some were expensive.

And some taught me lessons I would much rather have learned another way. 😉

There were moments when I thought I had found a wonderful answer, only to discover there was something else I hadn’t considered.

And times when what looked perfectly sensible on its own didn’t work nearly as well when I tried to bring everything together.

Even with all my years of business experience, I still had plenty to learn about building online for myself.

But those experiences became part of something invaluable.

I wasn’t simply studying what made successful online businesses work.

I was discovering what it felt like to build one for myself – with all the excitement, unexpected challenges, expensive lessons + extraordinary possibilities that came with it.

And Then It Became Personal in an Entirely Different Way

There was another reason this mattered so deeply to me.

One that had very little to do with websites, technology or business infrastructure.

And everything to do with two little girls.

The same two little girls who had been left at home that rainy night in Amsterdam.

Because while I was learning about what could make online businesses successful, I was also watching my daughters grow.

And I couldn’t help thinking about their futures.

One day, they would have dreams of their own.

Talents they would discover.

Things they would love doing.

Lives they would want to build.

And I wondered what kind of opportunities would be waiting for them.

Would they be able to do work they genuinely loved?

Could they build something meaningful + profitable around their own gifts?

Could they have the freedom to choose how, where + with whom they worked?

Could they build successful businesses without having to sacrifice the lives they wanted those businesses to support?

As a businesswoman, I paid attention to the problem.

As a mother, I took it personally.

And suddenly, the future I was imagining wasn’t only about what I might build.

It was about what I wanted my daughters – and others like them – to have the freedom + opportunity to build for themselves.

That became a much bigger reason to keep going.

And it’s the heart of the story I want to share with you next.

Every business begins somewhere.

And every meaningful business journey is built through the ideas we explore, the decisions we make, the lessons we carry forward + the Wise Steps we take next.

So before you go, I’d love to leave you with one Wise question of your own:

What are you trying to figure out one piece at a time - that might become clearer if you stepped back + looked at the whole?

Sometimes the wisest next step isn’t doing more.

It is understanding more clearly what all the doing is meant to build.

So give yourself permission to step back.

Look at the business as a whole.

Look at where you want it to take you.

And then choose the next Wise Step from there.
