[wise eDYNASTY WORDS]: Ch. 5 - What Usually Goes Wrong When People Start Online

Angela van Hoeven sharing what usually goes wrong when people start online

WHAT USUALLY GOES WRONG WHEN PEOPLE START ONLINE

WISELY SHARE…

Why so many good business ideas lose momentum early - and the website mistake that often causes it

At some point, many hopeful entrepreneurs reach the same moment:

They have an idea.

A product or service they believe in.

A desire to build something of their own.

And often, a very real reason to make it work.

Sometimes that reason is practical.

Sometimes it is personal.

And sometimes it is both.

That was true for me too. I was not exploring online business casually. I was trying to build something real while raising my children and creating a different future. I needed a business that could actually work.

Where many people begin

When people start online, one of the first things they look for is a website.

That makes sense.

They know they need a place to show what they offer.

A place to begin building visibility. A place that feels professional and presentable.

So often, they do what seems smart at the time:

they grab a website solution that is free, inexpensive, fast to set up, or easy to make look nice.

And at first, it can feel like progress.

But this is where things often start to go wrong.

A website that looks nice is not enough

What many people discover too late is that a pretty website is not the same thing as a business-ready website.

It may be fine for a simple online presence.

But when the time comes to actually sell, market, and manage a business well, many of those low-cost or prefab solutions begin to show their limits.

That is what happened to me.

I quickly set up an affordable solution and made it look nice. But later, I discovered that critical functionality – especially for marketing and growth – either was not included, was poorly supported, or suddenly came with additional costs that made the whole thing far less practical than it first appeared.

And that can be incredibly discouraging.

Because by then, people have already invested time, energy, and hope into what they thought was the right beginning.

Why this stops so many people

This kind of setup problem may sound small at first, but it often creates a much larger issue.

When people realize their website cannot really support the business they want to build – or that it will cost far more than expected to make it function properly – many lose momentum.

Some feel stuck.

Some feel frustrated.

Some feel misled.

And some quietly give up.

That is one reason so many good ideas never get the chance they deserve.

Not because the person lacked vision.

Not because the offer was not worthwhile.

But because the tools they began with were not truly built to support a real business journey.

The second mistake I ran into

After that first experience, I tried another path.

I hired a team to build a more custom website with more functionality.

That sounded like the better answer.

But I quickly discovered another problem: while developers may know how to build a website, that does not always mean they understand what a business actually needs in order to market well, manage products or services effectively, or grow in a sustainable way.

So even a custom solution can still leave major gaps if it is not built with the real needs of the business in mind.

That lesson mattered.

Because it showed me that the issue was not simply design.

And it was not simply “having a website.”

The real issue was whether the structure behind it could actually support the kind of business I was trying to build.

Why I’m sharing this

I’m sharing this because I know how easy it is for people to assume they are making the right first move – only to discover later that they have been building on the wrong foundation.

And when that happens, it can cost far more than money.

It can cost confidence.

It can cost time.

It can cost momentum.

And it can delay something meaningful from ever truly getting off the ground.

That is why this part of the journey matters so much.

If people are going to build online wisely, they need more than something that looks good.

They need something that can actually support the work ahead.

What this chapter points toward

This chapter is really about one practical truth:

A business-ready foundation matters.

And in the next part of this series, I’ll go deeper into what an online business actually needs beyond a beautiful website.

Because once you understand that, the path gets much clearer.
